How to help Ukrainians in Portugal. Volunteer experience, donations, list of platforms
Ukrainians continue to flee their country en masse because of the ongoing hostilities. Portugal, like other EU countries, welcomes refugees from Ukraine. Despite more than 4,000 kilometers separating Portugal from Ukraine, the flow of aid to Ukrainians from this country is quite considerable.
How to stand with Ukraine presents a series of materials on how to help those affected by the war in Ukraine: where to send money, bring clothes and food, how to help refugees find temporary or permanent accommodation, and more. In this release, we share a list of platforms where you can place an ad if you, too, want to shelter refugees.
On the second day of the war, the public association Help to Ukraine was promptly created to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine. There are about 80 people in the team. One of the volunteers, Olga, has been living in Portugal for more than three years. She shared her experience:
«Friends called me and asked me to join them, so I became an active member of the association within an hour. It’s hard to watch the world crumble before your eyes. If I can help in any way, I will. I mostly deal with social media, networking and any other activities the association needs. I can also load and pack humanitarian aid.»
The team specializes in sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine; more than 600 tons of cargo has been transported via trucks and TAP planes. Help to Ukraine directly cooperates with the Norwegian Open Heart Foundation, which helps deliver humanitarian aid to Ukraine efficiently, quickly and exactly where it is vitally needed.
«The most important thing for us is that the flow of humanitarian aid does not stop. We have an opportunity to organize prompt storage and shipment of trucks to Ukraine, but we always need humanitarian aid. Medicines, food, medical devices, medicines for chronic patients (l-thyroxine, glucose meters, etc.). So we kindly ask people to buy everything needed or negotiate with producers in Portugal. If you have a truckload of bandages, we will deliver them to Ukraine. If you have 100 mattresses, we will distribute them among refugees. If you run a canned food factory, we are ready to ship the goods,» says Olga.
You can donate clothes and medicines, volunteer to accommodate Ukrainian refugees, offer your professional services, or help financially. Volunteers are coordinated via WhatsApp chat.
