Google CEO says vibe coding makes software development fun again
The internet turned blogging into a profession, YouTube did the same for video content creation. Now vibe coding is doing something similar for software development—making it more accessible to people without technical backgrounds. Google CEO Sundar Pichai discussed this in an interview with Google AI Studio product manager Logan Kilpatrick
«Programming is much more enjoyable this way,» says Pichai. With AI, people can experiment and easily build applications and websites, even if they don’t know how to code. The CEO noted that thanks to vibe coding, development ‘has become inspiring again’ and now has a significantly lower barrier to entry.
Pichai added that vibe coding makes it easy to bring ideas to life: while previously ideas were described in words, now people can create prototypes and show them to others. It gives an advantage to those who practice it—including within tech companies. At Meta, product managers are already vibe coding application prototypes to demonstrate them to Mark Zuckerberg. At Google itself, there has been a noticeable increase in employees making their first contributions to the codebase.
Pichai acknowledges that, along with growing popularity, come risks, especially when dealing with large, serious projects where accuracy and security are crucial. Currently, vibe coding is better suited to experimental tasks than to mission-critical software. But as technologies develop, this approach will become increasingly powerful and an important part of the future of development. According to Pichai, what we’re seeing today is ‘the weakest’ level—and it will only get better from here.
